According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) "is a disorder that
develops in some people who have experienced a horrific, frightening or dangerous event". PTSD is often referred
to as the silent killer of first responders due to the stigma attached in asking for help. First responders have been
known to endure depression, suicidal ideations, uncontrolled anxiety, anger issues, paranoia, and negative
ruminations instead of asking for help. PTSD may be accompanied by a secondary issue, such as addiction to
prescription drugs, alcohol, risky sexual activity, gambling, and adrenaline rushes.
Rescue 1 Colorado preventive courses have been certified by Colorado, Missouri, and New Mexico Police Officer
Standard Training (POST) boards along with being included in courses offered by the International Critical Incident
Stress Foundation (ICISF) which is listed as a non-governmental training agency with the United Nations. Rescue 1
Colorado classes have been successfully taught to agencies across the United States and Canada. Our instructors
are retired first responders who have experienced and survived PTSD and possess the specialized education and
coping strategies needed to assist others in mitigating its impact.
